There are numerous pH test kits available to give you an accurate pH reading. There are also numerous and cheap pH meters available that are accurate to 0.1. Texture and color in no way determine pH. Nutrient availability is highly pH dependent. It is also important to take readings down the soil profile, not just the top 10cm.

What about planting winter crops under something like tomatoes to shade them from the hot sun? For example lettuce (I’m in Tennessee zone 7, we’ll 8 now 😉)

One thing you didn’t do and that was the “leaves” you took off…place those in a glass of water to get those shoots to grow roots to plant and instead of just one the 3 (I believe you removed was 3) will now turn into more 👍….get more for your money 💁‍♀️…..welcome😉👍

I think they should have to list the % of contents, so apartment people can just buy what they are looking for(assuming they do not need large quantities). While larger scale gardeners could follow your sage wisdom. Of course, you likely know that to make it even go further, just buy bags of the components and make your own to order for your specific needs!

I think one potential issue with planting it sideway like this is that most people will commonly just water at the base of the stem. During the initial grow phase you have to remember to water where most of the root is located.

You exposed my secret 😂 Because MG is so readily available I found out theyre all pretty similar. I mix orchid and some leca for aroid, more perile and tiny lava rocks/sand for succulents, water crystals for thirsty plants. The only soil that has to be different are the edible plants and the carnivorous. The rest I can alter. It's the same with the fertilizers. They're not that different. Blooming plants and foliage plants have different needs. Orchid mix, leca, and chunky perlite, coir/husk, charcoal are the mix ins to turn the basic bag into whatever you need.

You're absolutely right! I've done this for years. One bag each of potting soil, perlite and vermiculite lasts me several seasons, and I can create any kind of soil I need. I container garden and "custom mix" for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, flowers and herbs. I can't handle heavy hanging flower pots, so I mix up a special soil for them too.

As a prank, ok whatever you want to do is up to you. Filming it and putting videos of unsuspecting people on UA-cam for your audience in my opinion not ok. (Unless you got the people’s permission, if you did please put in video or description, or maybe I missed it? ) even if you buy the plants. Would you be ok with someone doing this to you?

I‘ve done this last year the first time, because the plants were a little long due to too high temperatures in the first month. It was the worst tomato year I’ve ever had 😭 Flowers kept falling off and the plant obviously wasn't able to transport the water around the corner. Never again! Just plant deeper!!🙏🏼

  • @moritlh

This is dumb. Not only do you risk breaking it, but you are also gonna have to water more often since most of the roots are now on the surface.

To create my own grow mixes I buy 1 bag of the cheap topsoil ~$2, 1 bag of the cheap compost ~$2, and a very large bag of Perlite ~$16 and then sift/mix them in various proportions like you mentioned as needed. Soilless Peat-based mixes dry out too fast for my area in my experience.

You must not have the fancy saying that helps you to get the plants out so you don't hurt them. You put the tray in and then there was a pedal that you pushed on and it would pop them out just enough that it was easier to pull them up out of its plug.

Can someone please help me. I’m new to gardening. I live in an apartment so I have to grow indoors. I have a tomato plant and it has one tomato on it that doesn’t seem to be getting any bigger, someone told me that my plant probably needs a bigger pot, as the plant isn’t growing any taller. I’m not sure how to safely transplant it to a bigger pot without killing it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am finally getting female flowers. BUT, the flower is not opening. Then fall off the next day. Yes it’s in the 90’s aready. I have shade cover on them now. The vines are very healthy, w tons of male flowers-and the males open. The females don’t , at all. No pests bothering it. They are under a tall hooped bug net covering as well. Never had this happen before. I’ve fertilized watered. Yah da. Must be too hot

Getting sticks out of your soil is key. Add perlite to your soil mix, bottom water with liquid fertilizer or add fertilizer, don’t transplant until roots are probably 3-4in. Or have 4-5 leaves. If you have large pots you can put 3-4 plants in each pot, then once they get larger you can separate & give them their own pot.

If the plant has been grafted do not plant deep because the root system has already been developed and planting deep diverts resources to the new roots that are not needed.
